  1. Simon Is an outstanding personal trainer with an excellent in-depth knowledge of his subject, able to articulate his instructions clearly in his very personable style.
I was 62 years old and aware that I was losing my body strength and flexibility. I signed up with Simon in July 2013 and began a programme of two one-hour sessions per week.
Initially I was anxious about my abilities, as although I was reasonably fit, I had never trained with weights before and I was even more anxious about this young coach’s ability to teach me anything that I did not know already. I have been amazed at how regular weight training in a scientific and incremental manner has transformed my strength, flexibility and wellbeing. (I completed this year’s B’ham half-marathon in my best time ever)
This is due to Simons thoughtful, planned and professional approach to our sessions. I was very sceptical about what I was being asked to do each week and without fail I would ask Simon to explain why I should squat, deadlift or press etc. his explanations are irritatingly flawless, science-based arguments. I have learnt more about the muscles and joints in my body in the past six months than the I ever have through reading or watching years of television documentaries.
We always finish with a ten minute cardio-session and Simon annoyingly manages to coerce me into performing in excess of what one would consider realistic or even sensible, I have survived thus far.
The Performance Gym is well equipped, cost of hire and Simon’s fee structure are both very reasonable.

Simon has been my personal trainer now for almost ten months, having signed up in the hopes of not only improving my strength and fitness but also to alleviate my total cluelessness when I found my self attempting to train by myself. The training I have done with Simon continues to surpass all my expectations – I have not only improved beyond what I felt I could expect but have also come to actually understand why the things I have learned and applied work, which takes the training to a whole other level.

I am still training with Simon and will absolutely continue to do so because he is not only extensively trained himself (from degree-level and even before that), but also very experienced, and a very good teacher – no matter how long I’ve been training with him his experience never runs out, and in each session new things are always learned. This latter point is what is so important to me personally as it makes each session stick with me long after it’s complete, and since I work for a fixed term I really appreciate that training with Simon will stick with me for the rest of my life. Saying all that, Simon himself does not approach his personal training monolithically – he is constantly immersed in his own progression as a trainer (now more so than ever since he has embarked on his PhD!) so no matter how long I train with him for I know he will always have a lot more to teach.

The facilities at Birmingham are excellent (and as above the prices are excellent) and it’s worth noting that the pt sessions take place in a facility separate to the main gym so you will feel no pressure from those around you, except from the goading of your pt 😉 Simon also has extensive knowledge beyond just personal training, and has a lot of advice to give on your diet and nutrition as well.

  3. Jonathan Morrison

Simon has been training me for about 10 months now, and in that time I’ve gone from slovenly desk lurker to active and capable. I made a joke with him at the beginning of our training sessions that I’d be happy if I could run for a bus and not be near-death if I made it, but he’s encouraged me the entire time to work beyond the expectations I have of myself and designed our sessions to make sure that I end up surprising myself.

I was motivated to do something about my health during my write up year, when I discovered my blood pressure was through the roof. I finally plucked up the tiny amount of courage needed to approach the gym staff at UOB, explain that I hadn’t been in a gym for nearly 10 years, ask for a membership and any info on personal training and advice. Shortly after, Simon contacted me for a sit down and we worked out what kind of thing I was aiming to achieve, and after some very simple advice go to the training part. Within 6 weeks my blood pressure was back where it should be and I was feeling infinitely better about my health and well being in general.

I feel like I’m made a huge amount of progress but there is always another, bigger mountain to climb and Simon’s talent lie’s in getting the right balance between pushing you to your limits and allowing you to feel how far you’ve come from your starting point.

Buses also not a problem any more.

I was recommended to work with Simon by my physiotherapist following the re-occurrence of a long standing back problem a year or so ago. I had stopped going to the gym and had lost a lot of my strength and flexibility. Simon has been careful to work with my physical limitations, but has nevertheless pushed me to achieve much more than I had expected. I enjoy the challenge of strength and resistance work as well as cardio, and although Simon is open to negotiation, he usually has the upper hand in helping me go the extra mile! I’m feeling much stronger and overall very well in myself and glad that I’ve recommitted to regular personal training as I approach my 60th year. Simon is good fun to work with, honest and encouraging. I very much recommend him as a well qualified and experienced trainer. (Lucy, Female, 59 yrs)

  5. Pam Jordan

I came to Simon with a very specific agenda. I wanted him to help me to put together a programme of strength / core work that I could maintain without attending the gym. I wanted to be able to do the sessions at home with a minimum of equipment. He was really supportive and taught me a wide range of exercises that I can choose from and put together in short circuits.
With his help I have incorporated this strength work into my daily routine and am already seeing the benefit from it.
Simon is always very encouraging, and pushes me to do more than I often think I am capable of. He is friendly and professional, and seems very knowledgeable on fitness issues.
I have really enjoyed the sessions and really appreciate how willing he was to work with my specific requirements. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a personal trainer. PJ (female, age 59yrs)

  6. Ramiz Khan

I have worked with Simon for 18 months now, and we have gone from strength to strength in that time. When I came to Simon, I was someone who would not partake in free weights exercises; such as squats or deadlifts. I tended to focus on cardio and other activities where I was comfortable. Simon encouraged me to engage in a variety of exercises to build up my strength and fitness. it has been a long journey but I could not have achieved it without the help of Simon. I am now someone who is confident in their body now and I have an amazing Personal Trainer to thank for this.

In the summer of 2019, I asked Simon to help me develop a diet plan to compliment my training. My goal was fat loss, whilst ensuring that my development was not affected. Simon not only provided me with a comprehensive plan that was easy to follow, he even offered additional knowledge to me in the form of various text books that he himself has used.

Working with Simon has been a pleasure, he is approachable, and more than happy to answer any questions you have. Through him, my knowledge has increased significantly, and I am able to apply that within my training plan to assist me in achieving my goals. Simon will provide you with a strong foundation from which you can then work to develop yourself further, and I recommend him as a Personal Trainer. Ramiz (Male, age 25yrs)

  7. Whitney Nyarambi

I aproached Simon as a personal trainer because he has a specialist background and training in working with people with long term conditions such as hypermobility, chronic fatigue and pain. I had tried every thing to help with my fatigue and nothing seemed to be working. At this time I was using a walking stick on a daily basis. Simon created a fitness program targeting my goals which were to improve my health and become stronger. After two months of using his program my pain and fatigue has been the best it’s ever been. I’ve only used my walking stick once on one fatigue flare up in the last 2 months. Compared to daily flare ups. So it’s really helping. I think my joints are slowly getting stronger. And I’ve managed to deadlift 90kg. When last year I struggled to do 35kg . I wouldn’t have got so far without Simons help and guidance. I’m finally training and getting stronger with no injuries. I would really encourage anyone with long term health conditions to work with Simon. He is extremely knowledgeable and can help you achieve your goals. I wish I did this sooner.

Now 74 I needed some help to build my strength, fitness and balance. Just one session with Simon set me on the right track and I’ve kept it up ever since. He is very knowledgable and demonstrated and explained things very well – both the how and the why. At the end of an hour I had a very clear way forward and I intend to book another session soon. Very highly recommend Simon.

I have had Simon as PT for many years now. He is knowledgeable, always up to date with the new science on training which he applies with care to me. I feel safe and know I get the best out of my training given how I am on the day. He listens to me and he sees how my body can do more or sometimes not so much in times of injuries. Always have a version or tips of good alternatives. He always makes a lot of effort to find a slot that fits my often busy schedule. In short the PT I can trust.

I wanted to gain confidence in the gym and to learn how to lift weights safely. Simon met me where I was and has enabled me to go from strength to strength. All my pesky aches and pains are getting better too. He is very knowledgeable, a great teacher, and makes workouts fun. I thoroughly recommend him as a PT.

  11. Phillippa Hentsch

Simon has been a fantastic PT – he supported me back to fitness after a long term illness and I feel so much stronger and healthier. Lifting weights always felt scary to me but he’s given me all confidence and support to build my own practice

  12. Aaron

Simon is an excellent personal trainer who is genuinely committed to helping you meet your goals. In my case, this was rehabilitation following knee surgery, and his guidance made a real difference. He has a strong understanding of how to build strength so that you can return to sport with confidence. He is also very chatty and creates a relaxed atmosphere during sessions whilst still pushing you. His outstanding football knowledge is an added bonus.

Hi I started my sessions with Simon as a reluctant participant as I used to hate the gym after my stroke . I knew I had to ensure my movement improved so I signed in with Simon even when I was feeling not brilliant. Simon had to put up with my moaning but his cheerful disposition and talking and asking me questions meant that I was able to began to concentrate on the areas that my body needed development. He have concentrated on legs and arms and also on the right side of my body that needs alignment. Positioning when walking and standing straight. I am stronger now and I began to look at weight management, but I am working very slowly at this. Something that he has told me is that everyone in the gym is there for different reasons and they are not worry about you, how you look, etc. However, I have realised that everyone is happy to support your journey. Gracias Simón x

I have been training with Simon since November last year. I started without any prior experience in either proper training or weightlifting. My goals then were (and still are) to get into shape, become stronger, learn and improve while at the same time enjoy what I do. It has been 6 months since, and I am on my way to achieving every single one of these goals and Simon has played a big part in this. From the start, he has been reliable, helpful & supportive with advice and encouragement. I feel stimulated to improve my performance at my own pace with every training session and I never feel pressured. I trust Simon, his expertise and knowledge. I was impressed by his desire to constantly grow as a professional and even learn how information is presented in the media so he is aware of what other people might know! I can always count on him to explain things (backed by science) if I have a question and to remind me to perform with proper form & technique. Simon is easy to talk to and I am always looking forward to our sessions. With his help, I have come to love weightlifting and my confidence with the weights continues to grow with every session. I am convinced that with his guidance, I am going to achieve my goals. It has been a great journey and I am very much looking forward to everything else that comes next 😉 -AR, Female, Age 29

I have been training with Simon, once a week, for almost a year. Although, in truth, I, often, dread the sessions, another part of me really looks forward to being ‘put through my paces’! And, once the hour and exercise is over, I feel so pleased that I am able to say I’ve done it. I can’t lay claim to this being solely down to my own exertion and input, however, as it is, in fact, largely down to the positive atmosphere and enthusiasm Simon creates in each session. I think one of the main strengths of Simon’s style of teaching is his ability to tune in to different personality types (I train with a friend) and adapt the programme and his teaching technique accordingly to get the best out of each individual. I particularly like the fact that he keeps the session content varied from week to week and really seems to carefully consider, and take into account, each week’s progress (or challenges) to concentrate and improve on in subsequent sessions. Simon is very encouraging as a trainer and even though I, regularly, put up protest, he is adept at managing my inclination to mentally give up on an exercise before I’ve even tried it. He always succeeds in persuading me to push myself and test my boundaries. As well as the obvious physical benefits of this, it also does a great deal for my self-esteem and confidence. Even after a relatively short time (following years of inactivity) I can certainly feel and see the difference that training has had on my body and mind and it is really good to be in a position of feeling stronger, less creaky and fitter. Thank you, Simon. April 2015 -E.S, Female Age 42

I have worked with Simon for over a year now and have always found him to be flexible and polite. The sessions I have had have been planned to use the fitness levels I have and to push me to further than I thought possible. We do a mixture of high intensity CV, Strength and circuits. The sessions are designed to push me, whilst I am always exhausted when I finish I feel invigorated later and have more energy in the day. I can feel the progress I am making since Simon has been my PT instructor, especially in the weights side of the session which is my favourite. I don’t usually like Simon at the end of the session but he doesn’t take offence, just tells me that he is doing his job well and I still turn up for the next session raring to go… After nearly two decades of doing no exercise, I decided to engage the services of a personal trainer. As someone who lacks confidence with doing exercise, I found the concept of ‘gyms’ rather unappealing and felt more comfortable with a personal trainer and a one to one approach. After some investigation, Simon was recommended as a highly experienced and qualified trainer with an outstanding reputation. I have been working with Simon on a weekly basis since June 2013 and the benefits have been immense. Each session is unique and adapted to suit me; each week a little more demanding to ensure continuous improvement. Simon brings variety to each session. He is encouraging while providing constructive feedback in order to improve technique and fitness, while minimizing risk of injury. Simon’s knowledge of fitness and exercise is excellent. He provides so much more than just personal training with a balanced, holistic perspective that takes into account the lifestyle I lead and the type of person that I am. His communication style is open, professional and clear. The flexibility of using a personal trainer is great as I have to fit my training around work and family commitments. There are days when I feel exhausted and Simon adjusts the intensity of the workout to compensate for my level of enthusiasm. I have become fitter; my core strength has increased; my posture and body shape is better and I have more energy. I have no hesitation in recommending Simon as an outstanding and professional personal trainer. April 2014 -A O’D, Female, Age 48

Simon has been my personal trainer since July 2012, during which time he has continually shown reliability, enthusiasm and professionalism. As a graduate of The University of Birmingham, Simon brings a great deal of technical and personal expertise to our training sessions and continually demonstrates an ability to adapt exercises, both in modality and focus, allowing me to realize my potential. I have always found Simon to be a highly organised and efficient communicator, both in terms of detailed instruction during training and in terms of arranging to fit sessions in around my job. This has been absolutely essential to me given the ‘unsocial’ hours of my work. I consider Simon to be a great role model, always challenging me to push myself to achieve my goals and providing the guidance I need to do this. Since I began training my original expectations have already been surpassed with vast improvements in strength, stamina and body shape. I thoroughly enjoy our training sessions and see the work we have done, in terms of investment, to be one of the best I’ve ever made. As a personal trainer I would not hesitate to recommend him! -JR, Male, Age 30

I have worked with Simon for just under a year now and have always found him to be polite and flexible. The sessions I have had with Simon are always well planned and varied and he is able to adapt exercise easily to increase or decrease the effort needed. We do a mixture of high intensity work, strength and circuit work. The sessions always push me but are invigorating and I can see/feel the progress made over the time Simon has been my PT instructor. Simon has been my Personal Trainer for 6 to 7 months. I have certainly improved my fitness and gained some body tone – which is quite an achievement for an unenthusiastic exerciser like me. We do a mix of cardio, general exercises and weights which I have found I really like although I had not done these before. Simon has a cheerful and calm way of encouraging me – and definitely does not shout. He has also helped with specific weaknesses some years after hip operations and has taken over where the physiotherapist left off. I always enjoy my personal training sessions with Simon, he has helped keep me motivated – and going far longer than I normally commit to exercise classes – so I would be happy to recommend Simon. Simon has been my Personal Trainer since July 2017, approximately 9 months. When I first began training I was recovering from a severe back pain and was generally fairly unfit. Over the following months a varied exercise regime designed by Simon, covering cardiovascular, free weights and general exercises, has enabled me to successfully increase my overall fitness levels, stamina and general wellbeing. With every week we have performed a wide range of new exercises which have both motivated and made each exercise week a fresh and enjoyable challenge. Coupled with Simon’s assistance, professional guidance and deep subject knowledge I feel that I have been able to attain levels of fitness that would have been beyond me without his expertise and enthusiasm. Each week he has emailed a new exercise plan enabling me to continue our training programme with structured visits to the gym that have assisted me in achieving my personal training objectives. I would, without hesitation, recommend Simon’s personal training expertise and guidance to anyone requiring a Personal Trainer to help in achieving their own training goals and objectives. May 2018. When I decided, just over a year ago, to improve my general fitness, I was asked by Simon what I wanted any training programme to achieve My main aim at the time, (not a particularly ambitious one), was to be able to coach and demonstrate the various moves realistically to my pupils in my chosen sport, (Fencing). Realistically, I knew that, at my age at the time, (72), any training programme was going to be challenging. Simon started the programme at a level that I could cope with, (just), but with his attitude, advice and encouragement, (and praise occasionally!), I gained confidence in my physical ability to take on the challenge.
Simon makes the sessions more interesting by changing the sessions slightly each week, working on different muscle groups with the occasional cardio exercise thrown in. I always finish the training sessions tired but motivated.
Simon is always easy to talk to, in any training relationship the ability to feedback what is working and what needs changing is essential, however it shouldn’t be critical or judgemental. I like to analyse my technique and general performance, Simon always has interesting and relevant comments to make, based on the high level of expertise and experience he possesses.
Over the year+ my strength, stamina, flexibility and balance have all improved. This gives me the confidence to believe that the improvement can continue for a few years yet, for which I totally thank Simon.

Simon is an excellent personal trainer, not only due to his knowledge of the subject, but also in how he quickly understands the clients needs and makes them feel at ease. Plus he is a very good and patient listener. I have a health issue which makes ‘normal’ cardio work difficult, however Simon was always ready to adapt the sessions to ensure I achieved the goal of improving fitness and strength without impacting on my health problem.
And some how, Simon actually made me look forward to the next session, which was impressive, as I was not a ‘fan’ of exercise when I started training!

I started training with Simon over two years ago with the main aim of finally stabilising and rehabilitating my right knew which had undergone several major surgeries as a result of recurrent inflammatory problems and regularly flared up swelling and preventing me from getting into any regular exercise routine. Simon took lots of time to really understand what the underlying problem was (which a lot of physios and trainers had not done before) and we started gently with regular stability and single leg strength exercises. Very quickly regular sessions with Simon finally helped me to consistent get back to exercise and strength training – over 2 years later the wider benefit to me has been to give me the confidence to start going back to other classes like body pump, yoga and spin which seemed like a world away. Simon has a really holistic approach to health, strength and training – I have learnt a lot from Simon. I always look forward to our sessions and they are a fundamental part of my health and fitness now. Female, age 51.

I’ve been training with Simon for over a year now and I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their health and fitness. He is incredibly knowledgable and experienced, and is able to advise and adapt when working with injuries. His experience goes beyond training in the gym and he has a good awareness of how training and other aspects of life such as work, stress and fatigue impact on each other.

When I first started with Simon my goals were to get stronger and improve my technique and confidence in the gym. Not only have we achieved this, I also notice significant improvements in my posture, mobility and breathing. I used to get intermittent pain in my knee from previous injuries, now I can’t even remember the last time I noticed it! I feel more comfortable in the gym and also how I carry myself in day to day life. I am so grateful to Simon for his guidance, and can honestly say training with him is one of the best decisions I have made.

I needed to start a programme to bolster my physical strength after I was diagnosed with a chronic illness.
I originally agreed with Simon to a 10 week period of weekly sessions to see how things progressed but have since continued the training as a rolling programme that has now been running for nearly a year.
Simon’s approach is measured and collaborative, providing optimal pressure to deliver meaningful results. Without establishing this sustainable exercise framework with Simon I am convinced that my gym membership would be largely redundant and I would be significantly more impaired physically and perhaps mentally as well.
I strongly recommend Simon’s services to anybody looking to improve the state of their physical wellbeing.

Simon has been a fantastic PT – he supported me back to fitness after a long term illness and I feel so much stronger and healthier. Lifting weights always felt scary to me but he’s given me all confidence and support to build my own practice

August 2014 -E.R, Female, Age 55
